IPTV on Android TV and Google TV: Best Apps and Setup

Android TV and Google TV are among the most capable platforms for IPTV. Both run Google's Android-based TV OS and have access to the Google Play Store, which means a wide selection of high-quality IPTV apps.

Android TV boxes (NVIDIA Shield, Mecool, etc.) and built-in Google TV devices (Chromecast with Google TV, Sony Bravia with Google TV) all work well.

TiviMate is the most popular choice for Android TV. It provides a full TV guide interface, excellent EPG support, and smooth channel switching. See the full TiviMate setup guide at /setup/tivimate.

How to Install TiviMate via Google Play

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Android TV or Google TV device.
  2. Search for TiviMate.
  3. Install and open the app.
  4. Select Add Playlist.
  5. Choose Xtream Codes API and enter your server URL, username, and password.
  6. Or choose M3U URL and paste your playlist link.
  7. Your channels and EPG will load automatically.

TiviMate's free version supports one playlist. The companion app unlocks multiple playlists, recordings, and catch-up.

How to Install IPTV Smarters Pro

  1. Open the Google Play Store and search for IPTV Smarters Pro.
  2. Install and open the app.
  3. Tap Login with Xtream Codes API or Add Playlist via M3U URL.
  4. Enter your credentials.
  5. Tap Add User to complete setup.

Configuring EPG

With Xtream Codes login, EPG is loaded automatically from the server. With M3U, you may need to add the EPG URL separately in app settings. Allow 5–15 minutes for EPG to fully populate on first load.

Common Android TV IPTV Problems

Buffering

  • Increase the buffer size in TiviMate: Settings > Player > Buffer Size.
  • Switch to Ethernet if using Wi-Fi. NVIDIA Shield and many Android TV boxes have built-in Ethernet ports.
  • Clear the app cache in device Settings > Apps > [App Name] > Clear Cache.

Channels Not Loading

  • Refresh your playlist in the app settings.
  • Verify your credentials are entered correctly.
  • Check your internet connection speed.

No EPG / TV Guide

  • In TiviMate: Settings > Playlists > your playlist > Refresh.
  • Confirm the EPG URL is correctly set for M3U playlists.

App Not Found in Play Store

If the Play Store is not available on your device (some older Android TV boxes), you can sideload apps via APK using a file manager. Download the APK from the official developer website.

Performance Tips for Android TV

  • Use hardware decoding in your app's player settings for smoother 4K playback.
  • On NVIDIA Shield, enable the High Performance Mode in Settings.
  • Keep your app and Android TV OS updated for best compatibility.

Internet Speed Requirements

  • HD (1080p): 15 Mbps minimum
  • 4K UHD: 25 Mbps minimum, wired Ethernet recommended
