Kodi is free, open-source media center software available on almost every platform — Windows, Mac, Android, Firestick, and more — and it's a popular choice among Canadian cord-cutters who want one interface for local media and live TV. It isn't an IPTV app on its own, but a built-in addon called IPTV Simple Client turns it into a fully capable IPTV player with a live TV guide.
Why Use Kodi for IPTV?
- One app for everything: if you already use Kodi for local media, add-ons, or a media library, you can watch IPTV in the same interface instead of switching apps.
- Free and open-source: IPTV Simple Client is a built-in PVR addon, not a paid product.
- Cross-platform: the same setup process works on Windows, Mac, Android, Android TV, and Firestick, since Kodi behaves consistently across platforms.
Step 1: Enable the IPTV Simple Client Addon
- Open Kodi and go to Settings (the gear icon) > Add-ons.
- Select My add-ons > PVR clients.
- Find PVR IPTV Simple Client in the list and select it.
- Click Enable, then Configure.
Step 2: Enter Your Playlist
Inside the addon's configuration screen, go to the General tab:
- M3U Play List URL: select "Remote path" and paste your M3U URL.
- Xtream Codes: IPTV Simple Client also supports Xtream Codes directly — select the Xtream Codes option in a newer version of the addon and enter your server URL, username, and password instead of a raw M3U link.
Step 3: Add Your EPG
Still inside the addon settings, go to the EPG Settings tab:
- XMLTV URL: select "Remote path" and paste your EPG URL (if you were provided one separately from your M3U link).
Save your settings, then restart Kodi. This last step matters — Kodi needs a restart to fully load a new PVR configuration.
Step 4: Watch Live TV
After restarting, go to the TV section from Kodi's home screen. Give it a minute the first time — Kodi needs to index the full channel list and EPG data before everything appears correctly.
Troubleshooting
Channels load but the EPG is empty: double-check the XMLTV URL was entered exactly as provided, with no extra spaces. A wrong or missing EPG URL is the most common cause of a blank guide in Kodi.
Playback stutters or buffers: Kodi's default buffer settings are conservative. Go to Settings > Player > Videos and increase the cache size, which gives Kodi more room to absorb brief network dips without freezing. If buffering only happens during peak evening hours, that's often ISP traffic management on major Canadian networks rather than a Kodi setting — see our buffering guide for details.
Channels stop working after a while: playlists can expire from Kodi's cache. Go back into the IPTV Simple Client settings and re-save your M3U or Xtream Codes details to force a refresh.
